Process Mining as a Lever for Operational Improvements at Porsche

Process mining is a key element of digital transformation, supporting companies on their journey to becoming data-driven organizations. MHP has served as a trusted advisor to Porsche AG in this area for five years. Across more than 25 projects and a wide range of use cases—cross-functionally and end-to-end—our MHP experts have helped Porsche bring unprecedented transparency to its business processes.

With MHP’s support and the market-leading software solutions from Celonis, Porsche has already unlocked more than €10 million in operational improvements through process mining.

Process Mining

Process mining is a technique for analyzing and optimizing business processes based on digital event data. It uses special algorithms to reconstruct and visualize process sequences using log data. Process mining enables companies like Porsche to use data to understand, monitor and optimize their processes, leading to more efficient processes and better business results.

The Brief

End-to-End Transparency for all Business-Critical Processes

Non-transparent and inefficient processes don’t just drain time and resources – they also create tangible economic disadvantages, especially at a moment when efficiency and cost control are top priorities. Delays, errors, and duplicate work drive up costs and diminish competitiveness. Anyone who has ever had to “quickly” create a report based on Excel spreadsheets will be all too aware of this. Porsche AG set out to eliminate such inefficiencies across the board.

Our brief was to visualize existing processes with the help of process mining, uncover vulnerabilities and develop suggestions for improvement. This called for not only our MHP experts’ technical expertise, but also a deep understanding of the technical process flows in the various areas of the company.

“MHP is passionate about empowering companies to embed data-driven decision-making for long-term success. Our collaboration with Porsche AG showcases how Process Mining unlocks real competitive advantages – enhancing efficiency, driving digital integration, and transforming processes end-to-end. As a trusted partner, we go beyond technical implementation, supporting organizations in their journey toward a seamlessly connected and optimized value chain.”

Federico MagnoGroup CEO MHP

“Process mining was first established in Logistics in 2018 and has since been rolled out across the entire company. It plays a key role in our journey toward becoming a data-driven organization by creating transparency in our operational processes. This transparency enables fact-based identification of improvement potential and supports us in implementing these measures in a targeted way. We apply process mining in an interdisciplinary manner—through close collaboration between the Center of Excellence, our specialist departments, and MHP as a strong partner.”

Achieving excellent processes with process mining

The approach

A Use-Case-Based Approach to Kick-Start the Project

To ensure sustainable development, our MHP team designed a structured, strategic five-phase methodology to build skills, structures, and processes so that process mining becomes a core capability of corporate management:

1. Strategic orientation and roadmap definition

Working closely with the Porsche Center of Excellence, the initial focus was on developing long-term objectives and roadmaps to gradually integrate process mining into the organization. This included visualizing the value chain and relevant interfaces.

2. Establishing strategic structures

A dedicated “Center of Competence” within the Finance organization was established to selectively bundle and scale internal skills and responsibilities for process mining.

3. Systematic identification of optimization potential

Analyzing relevant use cases along the entire value chain for the data-driven identification, prioritization and evaluation of optimization measures.

4. Design of future-proof process management tools

Developing new approaches and technologies to enable data-driven decision-making processes and to continuously improve operational excellence.

5. Sustainable implementation in the organization

Planning, implementing and continuous further development of optimization measures to establish data-based and proactive process control for the long term.

The Task

Orchestration of Collaboration

Strategic Development and Expansion of Process Mining

As a strategic partner, MHP developed concepts for gradually scaling process mining across the entire value chain – from procurement and production to after-sales—supplemented by central functions such as HR and IT. The goal was to firmly establish process mining as a long-term, central management tool within the organization.

A standout example of this evolution is the successful implementation of the Center of Competence Finance. Our MHP team supported the structured setup, developed targeted capability models, and designed customized functionalities for data-driven decision-making processes. In addition, our experts assisted in implementing advanced process mining technologies and in planning company-wide optimization initiatives.

Close collaboration between Porsche’s Center of Excellence, Celonis, and MHP has created a robust, scalable foundation for integrating process mining into corporate management for the long term.

Long-Term Partnership for Sustainable Process Excellence

MHP is continuously supporting the strategic process mining initiative at Porsche and is driving the transformation forward together with the sports car manufacturer. Key foundations have been laid over the last five years to establish a long-term maintainable and scalable system that transparently maps business-critical processes end-to-end. This approach enables specific optimization potential to be continuously identified, evaluated and implemented.

MHP remains closely involved as a strategic partner – our teams not only support the continuous development of existing solutions, but also drive forward new, forward-looking projects. We are working together with Porsche on the vision of a fully digitally networked process landscape in which all end-to-end processes are seamlessly integrated.

The result

Facts and Figures on Process Mining at Porsche
