Europe can do space. But can Europe scale, too?

Europe has outstanding space technologies. European companies develop highly sophisticated satellites, innovative platforms and technologically leading systems. But technological excellence alone no longer determines competitiveness.
The decisive race begins after innovation: who succeeds in industrializing new technologies quickly, building production capacities and scaling economically?
This is precisely where Europe faces its greatest challenge.
The results of our latest Space Report reveal a remarkable paradox: 74 percent of industry decision-makers surveyed expect a significant expansion of production capacities in Europe. At the same time, nearly two-thirds rate today’s scaling capabilities as low or limited. Europe is planning growth on an industrial foundation that a large share of the industry itself does not yet consider sufficiently scalable.
This is more than an operational issue for individual companies. It is a strategic challenge for the European space industry.
The Race Will Be Decided in Production
Europe has outstanding technological capabilities. But innovation and scaling follow different rules.
Innovation rewards individuality. Scaling rewards repeatability.
Many space systems are still developed, integrated and qualified on a program-specific and mission-specific basis. This model has shaped Europe’s technological strength for decades. At the same time, it makes growth expensive and complex. If every additional satellite requires almost the same development and integration effort as the previous one, complexity grows far more than productivity.
The next stage of development for Europe’s space industry therefore lies in industrialization: standardized platforms, modular architectures, digitized production processes and end-to-end value chain management.
This is not about traditional mass production. Space systems will continue to be sophisticated, highly specialized and often mission-dependent. The key is to manage their complexity in a way that prevents every new variant from starting from scratch. Reusable modules, clearly defined interfaces and digital development and manufacturing processes can help reduce development times, lower costs and expand capacities more quickly.
Industrialization therefore creates more than production volume. It creates speed, resilience and strategic agility.
More Capital Alone Will Not Solve the Problem
Many discussions about the future of the European space industry focus on investment. Rightly so: 27.7 percent of respondents see financing and investment as the greatest obstacle to scaling.
However, the conclusion that Europe simply needs to mobilize more capital falls short. Equally important is the question of how productively that capital can be deployed.
Organizations that pursue growth primarily through additional projects, more personnel and increasingly complex structures also increase their resource requirements with every new mission. Platforms, standardization and reusability, by contrast, enable growth without effort and costs rising at the same rate.
Europe therefore needs both: investment and industrial structures capable of efficiently translating that investment into additional performance. The decisive factor is not simply how much capital is available. The decisive factor is how much scalable value creation it generates.
Competition Will Be Decided Between Ecosystems
The logic of competition is changing as well. No single company can achieve the required scaling on its own. It emerges through collaboration between system integrators, suppliers, technology partners and digital value networks.
Our study shows that strategic manufacturing partnerships will continue to gain importance. This is a logical development: the performance of the space industry increasingly depends on how quickly companies can combine knowledge, data and capacities across organizational boundaries.
To achieve this, Europe needs industrial ecosystems with shared standards, compatible system architectures and transparent supply chains. Companies must align demand earlier, exchange production data securely and connect capacities flexibly. Only then can individual technological achievements evolve into robust industrial structures.
For executives, this shifts the focus of leadership. They must not only develop their own organizations, but also take the scalability of the entire network into account.
In the long term, success will therefore not necessarily belong to the company with the best individual technology. The decisive factor will be which ecosystem can transform new technologies into reliable industrial capabilities the fastest.
Europe Does Not Need to Copy the American Model
Europe does not need to imitate either Silicon Valley or the manufacturing models of American space companies. The European space industry has strengths of its own: technological depth, highly specialized companies, established industrial networks and extensive experience with complex systems.
The challenge now is to translate these strengths into a scalable European model. The future lies somewhere between bespoke project-based manufacturing and traditional mass production: in the repeatable industrialization of complex systems.
Achieving this requires platform strategies, modular architectures, digital end-to-end value chains and resilient production networks. Equally important are clear decisions about which technologies and capabilities Europe must maintain itself for reasons of economic resilience and strategic sovereignty.
Because technological sovereignty is not reflected solely in the ability to develop something. It is reflected in the ability to make it available reliably, economically and at sufficient scale.
Europe can do space. The technological foundation is in place. Whether this leads to long-term competitiveness and strategic independence will now be decided by industrialization.
