In recent years, Industry 4.0 has been frequently debated – indeed, much has been done regarding the concrete implementation of Industry 4.0 projects in companies. However, this frequently relates to individual initiatives – why many companies are interested, what the current status is in the respective sector, and what the activities and progress of their competitors look like. So that organizations can better classify how they are performing in comparison with the competition, benchmarks provide suitable information: They show the current development status of manufacturing companies in the German-speaking region. And they support the identification and elimination of gaps, as well as the exploitation of potentials.
In order to give companies a well-founded overview, MHP, together with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich (LMU), has meanwhile published the third Industry 4.0 Barometer. The results of the survey provide important findings on the status quo of Industry 4.0 in companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. From these findings, the authors derive recommendations for action that may contribute to meeting the various challenges. According to the Barometer 2020, there are obstacles due to, among other things, old IT system landscapes and a high workload for employees in daily operations. On the other hand, it is an essential driver for Industry 4.0 when management has digital competences.
