Catastrophe app wins university prize

MHP and Hochschule Reutlingen award prize for innovative app

Ludwigsburg/Reutlingen – For 10 years, the Hochschule Reutlingen (university) and the management and IT consulting company MHP have jointly awarded a prize for innovative projects in the field of business informatics. This year, the four students Halim Bahar, Deniz Kaya, Thi Huyen Trang Nguyen and Lisa Marlen Zimmermann will receive the university prize, which is endowed with 1500 Euro, for the development of their catastrophe app (KatApp), which was created in cooperation with experts for disaster medicine from the Universitätsklinikum Tübingen (university clinic). The app is intended to support rescue teams with triage decisions in event of a catastrophe. In particular in situations with many injured or sick people, a rapid and at the same time thorough assessment is crucial. For this purpose, there are various already established triage systems with specified criteria and instructions for action, as well as medical guidelines according to which doctors and emergency staff can orient themselves even in extraordinary and hectic situations.

Digital imaging of the mSTaRT algorithm

In this connection, the mSTaRT algorithm (Modified Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) is a rule-based and established procedure for answering step by step certain questions on the condition of patients in order to make a decision regarding the urgency of treatment. This procedure has now been digitally imaged with the KatApp created by the group of students from the Hochschule Reutlingen. The information collected on the condition of the patients can be analyzed faster than previously because all the relevant parameters are stored in the app. The digital imaging of the mSTaRT algorithm makes it possible to achieve a faster objective and precise presentation of the results on the basis of physiological findings (vital data). Emergency responders can thus immediately decide which treatments and means of transport must be prioritized. In this way, in event of a catastrophe the optimum and above all fastest care can be ensured for all patients.

Sarah Aigner, Employer Branding at MHP: "We have been cooperating closely with the Hochschule Reutlingen for many years already. We are always especially delighted with the innovative projects and ideas, as the students are always very committed and carry out their work with great passion. We also see this commitment in this year's winning project"

The KatApp will initially be used in a trial run by the Universitätsklinikum Tübingen. The project team from the Hochschule Reutlingen is also planning to complement the app with further established procedures for defining specific categories for injured persons and expanding to include several language versions.

Sarah Aigner will be pleased to provide more information on the KatApp in a personal discussion. Simply send an e-mail to PublicRelations(at)mhp.com.
