Digital technologies can make a major contribution towards solving the climate crisis. For example by increasing efficiency in logistics and production or promoting a circular economy. Especially in regard to a circular economy, digital twin approaches are very interesting – also within the context of a "second life". Digital technologies themselves also have a negative environmental impact. However, probably only a very few companies actually know how high the impact is and how they can become more sustainable in this respect.
The key to a sustainable approach in the development, use and disposal of hardware and software lies in the understanding of environmental impacts. The result of an emission calculation for IT, for example, takes account of the complete cycle: from the development of IT hardware, mining of rare raw materials to produce the components, the use of energy and water, and the nature and duration of hardware use through to recycling. The traditional starting point is a situation analysis. Using this as a basis, goals can be defined and a sustainability strategy developed. The defined measures, which are to be implemented according to a specific timetable, are also included in a road map.
In our MHPMHPDeepDive "The path to sustainable IT" we will examine the current challenges for companies in establishing sustainable IT against the background of increasing digitalization projects. We will explain why a sustainability concept is important for IT and how such a concept can also be implemented in your company. We will present different solution approaches in this respect.
What awaits you in our MHPDeepDive:
- We will analyze the current conflict in companies – promoting digital projects while simultaneously reducing IT-related emissions.
- Experience by means of different solution approaches how negative environmental impacts of your IT can be minimized.
