White Paper on Product-Compliance

Establishing product-compliance competences

Ludwigsburg – The withdrawal of product certificates or the expensive adaptation of products, the jeopardizing of audits and certifications or tough civil or criminal law sanctions – these are all possible consequences if companies implement product-compliance measures insufficiently. However, ensuring that all legal specifications are correctly observed is an increasingly demanding task – at the current time, particular in the automotive industry. This is attributable to, among other things, the many new technologies that are available and need to be appropriately regulated. Consequently, the number of specifications to be observed continues to increase. Inadequate organizational and procedural competences in companies also aggravate the situation.

Uwe Möhrstädt, Associated Partner at MHP and author of the white paper: "The effective integration and tracking of the regulatory requirements involves great administrative effort. The result is a huge need for internal resources in order to ensure product-compliance along the entire value creation and delivery chain, as well as throughout the entire product lifecycle."

In order to provide companies with orientation regarding the entire theme of product-compliance, as well as to support them in organizing the systematic observation of regulations, the management and IT consulting company MHP has published the white paper "Product Compliance – How to manage product complexities and obligations of proof". In the white paper, the authors outline the current situation regarding product-compliance, as well as the developments and the resulting challenges. It is then systematically explained where difficulties often lie in the companies and what can be done about them. For this purpose, a checklist is also used that determines the maturity of a company with regard to its product-compliance competences.

Implementing minimum requirements for product-compliance

The authors of the white paper first recommend an analysis and evaluation of a company's own corporate strategy and culture, as well as the structural and procedural organization. Also a comparison of product and corporate strategies at various points in the value creation and delivery chain is useful in order to implement the minimum requirements for product-compliance. In a further step, the maturity of a company with regard to its product-compliance competences should be determined. By means of a product-compliance check, the maturity can be estimated. Andrés Hernandez, Partner at MHP and also a co-author of the white paper: "Overall, we pose questions in three areas of competence in order to obtain an assessment of the extent to which a company is able to harmonize the regulatory requirements with the required speed of innovation and product development. On this basis, initial recommendations for action can then be devised and relevant product-compliance competences can be established for the long term."
