Serverless architectures: Possibilities and limits

Next Level Cloud Architecture – From on-premise to serverless computing and beyond

Without cloud applications, many companies will be left behind in the digital transformation. For even now, the development costs and the necessary infrastructures for technologies such as artificial intelligence or machine learning are so high that their application is only worthwhile if many companies share their use. The cloud principle pursues precisely this idea: Cloud resources are shared according to requirements and billed according to use. Meanwhile, infrastructures of hyperscalers hosted in the cloud have become established.

The continuation of this idea is serverless computing, with which individual server instances are no longer visible for the developer. A significant feature is the automatic scalability, for example the adaptation to the number of users or the use requirements. Furthermore, the developers do not have to worry about the purchase, provision or administration of backend servers. They concentrate merely on writing and providing codes. Modular systems can be functionally updated. Operational and development costs can be saved, as infrastructures can be used more efficiently and idle hardware can thus be significantly reduced. In addition, free capacities arise for developers to promote innovations. However, it is important that serverless approaches are carefully selected and then correctly implemented. Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers services for the implementation of serverless architectures.

In our MHPDeepDive "Serverless architectures: Possibilities and limits", we will present the serverless portfolio of AWS and examine in more detail the application level "Backend as a Service" and the function level "Function as a Service". Cloud architects, as well as developers and IT decision-makers, will find out what potentials serverless architectures offer, as well as what the limits and the typical pitfalls are. Furthermore, we will show the areas of monitoring and testing that contribute to the early identification and elimination of problems.

What awaits you in our MHPDeepDive:

  • We will present the serverless portfolio of AWS and explain the dimensions "Backend and Function as a Service“.
  • We will show the potentials and limits of serverless architectures.
  • You will find out why monitoring and testing are important for problem diagnosis.
