Pure savings program or also a driver of growth?
Some things just don't go out of fashion: For example, Global Shared Services (GSS) and the associated Shared Service Center. Especially in large and globally active corporations, shared services are already established in many departments (Finance, IT, Purchasing, HR, …): Firstly, this means that transactional processes are standardized and concentrated in organizational units, which increases efficiency. Secondly, Shared Service Centers, in the form of Centers of Excellence, serve to ensure the loyalty of highly qualified personnel for complex, knowledge-intensive activities. Both can be on an onshore, nearshore or offshore basis. Above all for new business models that have arisen within the framework of digitalization, for example for the invoicing of digital services, shared services play an important role. They can contribute to a decisive competitive advantage (including reduction in costs, scalability, access to expertise). In view of the current crisis, the topic has gained an additional dynamic.
Companies that do not yet have any shared services should ask the question whether they want to introduce them. For organizations that already set store by shared services, the question is rather how they can be expanded. It is primarily about making processes even more efficient and customer-oriented, as well as establishing further services. The influence of the digital change and associated developments also allow a greater degree of process automation. Companies should therefore question their individual shared services concept and existing processes and strategies in order to operationalize their corporate strategy in a sustainable manner.
