E-mobility as a driver for new business models
Many OEMs see difficult times ahead, and several car dealerships are fighting for survival. And not only because of COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions. Manufacturers and dealers waited far too long and above all followed their established strategies – instead of focusing on new business models and positioning themselves as the mobility providers of the future. This is being done by new providers such as Tesla, Byton or Uber, who are attacking with innovative business models and securing important market shares in the area of e-mobility. The current situation is exacerbating the problems, car purchases are being postponed – the first dealerships have had to close. If no effective measures are taken now, the automobile trade will lose 1 per cent of its return on sales in the next four years. This is our estimate. Car dealerships should therefore work together with the OEMs on a fundamental change.
Initially, this presupposes an openness towards new developments and requirements. For this, there must be the will to show personal initiative to get things moving – and, as a dealer, not to rely on the manufacturers. For this purpose, there are many starting points: from new sales formats to services designed for new technologies in the vehicles, as well as additional business areas. In the best case, car dealerships can develop this in a holistic manner with a top-down approach that also integrates the perspective of the manufacturers.
